Rosetta Stone
Anyone ever used Rosetta Stone to learn a language? I'm trying to find ways to kill time at work that are at least semi-productive and I thought
learning a language might be fun.

If you are looking for a certain language let me know, I know a site...
Never used the program though, I don't want to learn any other language. Never interested me.

what made you decide on Cantonese over Mandarin?
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

I've used it before, its a quality program. The sticker price is absurd though, torrents are the way to go.

At the time I was dead set on moving to Hong Kong.
Up until recently I was training in Wing Chun and attended a few classes when I was in HK and I remember thinking if i could speak the same language
as these kids i would learn a lot more.

^ HA! Yeah, funny how that whole speaking the same language thing works. So did they take it easy on you in class because you were a foreigner?
i've heard good things about rosetta stone, but yeah, it's mad expensive.

yeah it was all good.
i was very nervous at first as soon as i walked in all i could here was people mumbling the word 'gweilo' (the term for white people over there, it
means 'white ghost' but it's not a derogatory term or anything) and pointing at me. Once I started I going through the forms though and 'rolling' with
a few people they were cool and started trying to have very broken english conversations.
it's interesting actually as if you imagine the stereotypical way you might imagine someone from Hong Kong speaking very broken English, that's
actually how the language works. eg there's no differentiation between 'me' or 'i' which is kinda why it sounds their English sounds that way as
there are literally much less words in the langauge than in English.

haven't tried rosetta stone but i have good experiences with pimsleur. the goal is to get you talking as fast as possible. they're 30 minute audio
lessons where you pronounce words and sentences. it's a good introduction to a language. these days whenever i go on vacation to another country
(russia, japan, thailand) i'll do a pimsleur course beforehand. it takes some discipline though.
