Emergency Declared After Anti-Nazi Riots

TOLEDO, Ohio - A crowd protesting a white supremacists' march Saturday turned violent, throwing baseball-sized rocks at police, vandalizing vehicles
and stores, and setting fire to a neighborhood bar, authorities said.
When Mayor Jack Ford and a local minister tried to calm the rioting, they were cursed for allowing the march, and Ford said a masked gang member
threatened to shoot him.
At least 65 people were arrested and several police officers were injured before calm was restored about four hours later.
Ford blamed the rioting on gangs taking advantage of a volatile situation. He declared a state of emergency, set an 8 p.m. curfew through the weekend,
and asked the Highway Patrol for help.
"It's exactly what they wanted," Ford said of the group that planned the march, which was canceled because of the rioting.
At least two dozen members of the National Socialist Movement, which calls itself "America's Nazi Party," had gathered at a city park to march under
police protection. Organizers said they were demonstrating against black gangs they said were harassing white residents.
The violence broke out about one-quarter of a mile away along the planned march route shortly before it was to begin. One group of men pounded on a
convenience store, and others overturned vehicles. There was a report of a shooting but police hadn't found a victim, Police Chief Mike Navarre said.
About 150 police officers chased bands of young men through the area. Officers wearing gas masks fired tear gas canisters and flash-bang devices
designed to stun suspects, but the groups continued throwing rocks and bottles. Several officers and firefighters suffered minor injuries, Navarre
said. At one point, the crowd reached 600 people, officials said.
Finally, police marched shoulder-to-shoulder down the street shouting to people to stay inside, and the crowd of several hundred broke up.
At least 65 people were arrested on charges including assault, vandalism, failure to obey police and failure to disperse, Navarre said. He said the
white supremacists had left hours earlier.
"We frankly could have made a couple hundred arrests easily," Navarre said. "We just didn't have the resources on hand to arrest all of them."
The mayor had appealed to residents the night before to ignore the march. He said the city wouldn't give the Nazi group a permit to march in the
streets but couldn't stop them from walking on the sidewalks.
When the rioting began, Ford tried to negotiate with those involved, but "they weren't interested in that." He said people in the crowd swore at him
and wanted to know why he was protecting the Nazis.
They were mostly "gang members who had real or imagined grievances and took it as an opportunity to speak in their own way," Ford said.
"I was chagrined that there were obvious mothers and children in the crowd with them," he said.
Thomas Frisch, 76, said a large group of men destroyed the exterior of a gas station next to his home of 30 years.
"A whole big gang started to come in here. Next thing you know, they're jumping on the car. Then they overturned it. Then they started on the
building, breaking windows, ripping the bars off," he said.
Louis Ratajski, 86, and his nephew, Terry Rybczynski, left Jim & Lou's Bar as a crowd gathered in front pelting police with rocks and breaking the
windows. They climbed down a fire escape from the apartment where Ratajski lived over the bar and only later saw the fire on television.
"I was shaking. I feared for my life." Rybczynski said.
Keith White, a black resident, criticized city officials for allowing the march in the first place.
"They let them come here and expect this not to happen?" said White, 29.
A spokesman for the National Socialist Movement blamed police for losing control of the situation.

I was watching this on cnn this afternoon, seeing the aerial footage.
It mainly kept repeating the part where the black guys were vandalizing and looting the store.
That is all they showed. They kept looping it too.

yep. way to go freedom fighters. im the last one to condemn chaos but for fucks sake do you really think youre making yourself look good by denying
people the very freedom you claim to uphold? all of my grievances about america aside i think one of the greatest things about living here is that
people are allowed to voice their dissent without being lynched for it. yet.
a lot of people died for that right. black and white, right and left.

when i was much younger and did the ns thing for a while i used to pass out literature and talk to people. never kicked anyones head in that wasnt
trying to do the same to me. i debated groups of jews more than once and talked to quite a few blacks with no problem. the only time shit got nasty
was with ara kids..if any of you are around this board id like to ask you. how can we have a free flowing exchange of ideas "the mark of a civilized
society" when you cant even listen to an opinion that differs from yours without feeling threatened and having to resort to violence? violence is fine
and good but sometimes its nothing but a disguise to cover the fact that you just might agree with what youre lashing out at a little more than youd
like to admit.

just toclarify in case there are any misconceptions im sure as shit not saying that nazi skins are any less senseless than the people i mentioned
above. i was only using the way i conducted myself during that period of my life as an example. i made sure the people that ran with me did the same.
only one time after a rally did i have the misfortune of hanging out with another crew.. these fucking kids were so proud of the fact that theyd
broken into some multiethnic church the night before and sprayed a bunch of their little tags and swastikas and "fuck niggers" all over the place.
then they decided to go into town to find some "spics to beat down". thats when we decided to go home embarrassed and disheartened. i hope some
"spics" kicked those fucking kids heads in. i know that many many nazis dont follow the beliefs that i offered in the above post and my point is that
when you act just like them.. you are them. i was an anti as a kid and again a ns while still a kid. i was looking for some great truth. only great
truth ive found is that people are a hell of a lot more alike than theyd like to admit. now as an old man ive realised that i dont much give a shit
for anyone on either side. theyre welcome to keep on killing each other to their hearts content. just stay the fuck out of my yard nad leave me and
mine in peace until peace is no longer an option.

yeah I feel ya there Terror.... I myself was a traditional skinhead for a long time with SHARP beliefs as far as the anti racism goes.... I started
claiming SHARP several years ago but still kept my traditional skinhead beliefs of not talking my politics and not getting involved really. Now as I
have become older I have seen many things through altercations that I have with Confederate Hammer Skinheads, Outlaw Hammerskins, National Front,
American Nazi Party, and more that there are some good and some bad.... But that also goes along with any lifestyle, movement, etc. I mean look at
SHARP the true essence of SHARP back in the 80s was to promote the fact that not all skinheads were racist to the media and general public.. But then
you started having all of your ARA bitches get involved, spread the brainwashed politics and so much more. They got violent and would beat people down
because of the colored laces in their boots... I mean that bullshit is ridiculous... I dont care much for a nazi nor a racist but if you dont talk to
me about politics and whatnot then we can sit back and have a beer but also know that I come from Jewish blood on my fathers side that died in
Aushwitz, Krakow and Dachau so I am not too fond of a nazi but eh what can you do... I am not them and can not change them BUT maybe I can talk to
them, understand where I am coming from and maybe change their mind and beliefs about it all....
anywho back on subject yeah these people that were doing the looting, burning, vandalism, etc just fed fuel to the fire that "they dont care about
their neighborhoods".... That is one thing that spreads the nazi / white supremicist ideals around... so all they are doing is increasing their hatred
for said people! I mean the same thing happened in the riots back some years ago in California which started because of the Hopped up on PCP dumbass
Rodney King.... I mean a lowly little fuckin truck driver, Reginald Denny, got pulled out of his truck while he was at a light WORKING BE THAT, and
given a severe beating just because some of these people dont care and are looking for an excuse to break the law and in the words of my Filipino g/f

What you guys don't understand though, this was started about gang violence in Toledo. That is hilarious because there really is no gang violence in
Toledo! Honestly, nothing goes on in that city. The most problem you'll ever have is a bum coming up and asking for change while walking to a Mudhens
game. I mean, sure, like every other city there is a break-in every once and a while, a murder every other month or so, but for the sheer size of
Toledo, I'd say violence and crime is rather low there as oppoesed to any other city of it's size.

half of my family live in clevo and akron. what sucks is that my grandparents' neighborhood used to be quiet and calm and very family oriented. you
could go to the park in the center of the neighborhood and hang out with your friends, skate, make out with a pretty girl and noone would fuck with
you. now, you have to watch your back everywhere you go. the area is falling to shit, and it pisses me off.
