Best big name / small venue show?

Have you ever gotten to see a big name band in a small venue? Maybe it was before the band got big, or they were doing a 'club' tour?

The only bigger name bands I can recall seeing in a small place would have to be Nirvana and Green Day. There was a bar on South Street in Philly that had shows all the time, and both of them played there before they got so huge. It was probably around 1990, and there couldn't have been 100 people at the shows.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

I remember seeing Pantera at small venues on their Cowboys From Hell tour and their Vulgar Display Of Power tour. White Zombie was the opener for one of them. I saw Marilyn Manson many years ago in a small club. Dropkick Murphys, Hatebreed, and SOIA to name a few of others.

Have you ever noticed how crayons are a lot like M&M's? All the colors tend to taste the same.

Oi!

I almost forgot! We saw Shane MacGowan play at a bar called The Irish Rover (duh) in Astoria, Queens (duh again) last summer. Any time Shane is in New York City, it's guaranteed he'll be staying at the Gramercy Park Hotel and drinking at The Irish Rover. There may not be many others on this board who care, but for me, this was one of the best shows ever. This guy is a genius. Here are a few pics...

Oh yeah, the band he's playing with is Lancaster County Prison. They were shooting a video for one of their songs that Shane sings on. After two or three takes of that song, they did about 10 traditional Irish songs, including Whiskey in the Jar, Irish Rover (duh x3), Dirty Old Town, and Lonesome Highway.

I used to work at a club/bar and I saw Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, Incubus, a whole shitload of those gay radio rock bands in a place that barely held 200 people. I saw many a small Hatebreed show over the years. I saw Terror in a basement in Denver. There's probably some other stuff I can't think of right now.
P.S. - at that same club I used to work at, check this show that got cancelled at the last minute: Cold As Life, All Out War, Clenched Fist, and an unkown honky rapper name Kid Rock.

I guessmy big band/little show earth crisis in a strip mall little store (like a nail place or something but it was gutted), like 500 kids...
this was on the destroy the machines tour I belive
I don't think I have ever heard another band sound exactly like the record with having a massive p.a. to play thru

as for the Shane MacGowan pics....fucking rad
my dream is to be an old drunk irish bastard and sing pub songs all day, after the kids grow up though....

duane next time you hear of anything like this in the city let me know
I am close enough to make it there

Blood For Blood back in around 98 at the Mindbomb in St Catharines, the place only holds like 75-100 max and it was packed.
Hatebreed at the Reverb too in like 2000 or something, that was maybe 250 people.
Gob at the Vault in St Kitts in like 95 then they got big and now nobody cares again.

I forget what else. Alexisonfire at the NAC a couple years ago with like 60 people now they fuckin sell out in Toronto.

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

well, Ive thought about this for a while now and I cant think of one fucking bigger named band Ive seen in a small place. Well, actually I saw Converge on my 21st birthday in this small shithole that I loved called The Hanover House in Meriden, CT. I really wasnt feeling too well because I had gotten knocked around during One King Down's set right before that so I left after Converge played a few songs. I wouldnt say that Converge is huge though.
